Description

The Juma mosque in the village of Kumukh dates back to the 8th century - it is one of the oldest architectural monuments of Dagestan. Juma Mosque is located in the central part of the village of Kumukh. It was erected in 778 - 779 after the capture of mountainous Dagestan by the Arabs. The mosque was built of stone in an architectural style typical of ancient Lak-Arab buildings. On the western side of the Juma Mosque, an inscription was made indicating the date of its construction and the repairs carried out. The Kumukh Juma Mosque is considered one of the oldest not only in Dagestan, but throughout the Russian Federation. It has survived to this day in its original form.
