Memorial'noye kladbishche «Kyrkhlyar»

Description

Kyrkhlyar is a historical burial place of the 7th - 9th centuries. located on the territory of the Northern cemetery of Derbent. It is believed that Kyrkhlyar appeared during one of the earliest Arab campaigns against Derbent, presumably in 643. According to legend, the ghazis (heroes of the struggle for the Muslim faith) fought the Khazars in the course of holy jihad - that is, to convert local residents to orthodox Islam. The main battle lasted six days, during which 20,000 infidels were killed. On the part of the Arabs, the losses amounted to only 40 soldiers, who thus became shahids and were buried precisely in the Kirkhlyar cemetery. The burial place, included in the list of state-protected monuments, is revered as the main Muslim shrine by believers not only in Derbent, but throughout Dagestan. People come here especially for prayer. In the middle of Kyrkhlyar, a small stone building was built, covered with a dome as high as a man. The building has a special recess for offerings, where you can put coins and put candles.
